encountering lent

During the season of Lent, we gather as people seeking relief from the relentlessness of the world – from never-ending greed and selfishness, doubt and fear, hate and envy – those things which continually press in to pull us away from God’s love. Those inexorable pressures which turn us inward and divert our gaze from family, friend and neighbor. The seemingly unstoppable forces which cause us to lose sight of the humanity of the ‘other’ and the preciousness of creation. Yet as relentless as the world may seem, our God is even more so… relentless in loving us… relentless in pursuing us… caring for us… forgiving us. And so we gather. And wonder.
